Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) Hybrid Search Calculator
By Shaheer Ul Hassan (Muhammad Shaheer) — Agentic AI & Systems Engineer
Free interactive Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) simulator and hybrid search calculator for AI and RAG engineers. Compare dense vector semantics with sparse lexical (BM25) rankings in real time.
What is Reciprocal Rank Fusion?
Reciprocal Rank Fusion (RRF) is a rank aggregation algorithm that merges search results from multiple retrieval systems without requiring score normalization. It calculates the score of each document by summing the reciprocals of its ranks across all retrieval lists: RRF_Score(d) = Σ (w_m / (k + rank_m(d))).
Why Hybrid RAG Requires RRF
Dense vector embeddings excel at broad conceptual intent but struggle with exact alphanumeric codes, SKUs, and domain-specific acronyms. Sparse BM25 lexical search matches exact tokens but fails on synonyms. Fusing both via RRF provides the highest MRR@10 across enterprise benchmarks.
